Here is the summer, the sun of the Greek Islands awaits us, the largest of the islands, THE CRETE, we have not been there for 19 years.
There must have been a lot of change since then. For the moment we are leaving the Lyonnaise region to join Ancona, we must be there on Saturday at the end of the afternoon. For this first day we stop towards Parma.
The night was short, we get up very early because we know the traffic difficulties on the Italian highways and we do not want to miss our boat.
The traffic difficulties were confirmed but we arrived on time, moreover the ferry left with 1 hour late, we did not have much time in Greece to reach the port of Piraeus and our ferry to Crete. The open deck is not really open but we are fortunate that the boat fill rate is low.
Disembarking at the port of Patras around 4:00 p.m. we head to Athens to take the ferry around 6:00 p.m. Direction the Crête.
6:00 am we dock at the port of Heraklion, we want to visit the city, given the very early hour we park without any difficulty
The temperature is cool, we can stroll around town without sweating, we look for the market located at ODOS 1866, this street is essentially a suite of tourist shops, as this type of shop often replaces traditional merchants.
We leave Heraklion along the coast to Georgioupoli (seaside resort) parking on this coast is not easy but we find a tavern by the sea which welcomes the motorhomes (we are 4 motorhomes) in return we have lunch there, we only spend one night there.

We leave our bivouac and follow the north coast, we pass through the villages of VAMOS (little interest) and VRISES very pleasant.
Afternoon beach before joining LA CANE at the end of the afternoon.
We are unpleasantly surprised by the change of the city of LA CANE, the market as well as the adjacent streets are only a succession of souvenir shops.
We want to go to the restaurant we find a very good one thanks to the guide the "CHRYSOSTOMOS" we were so disappointed with the advice of the guides .....
After this good meal we leave LA CANE, we do not want to sleep in the city center despite the ease, because of the heat. We always follow the coast, for tens of kilometers these are only tourist complexes with its shops we finally manage to find a place by the sea, we sleep under the sign "camping prohibited" we will not see the sign until the morning , we spent a quiet night and in addition really alone.

We leave our bivouac to reach Falasarna beach before that we go through Kolymbari where according to the guide there are many octopus fishermen, but this village is desert and without interest.
We do our shopping in the town of Kissamos, a lively town and not too touristy as we like.
Arriving in the bay of Falasarna we dominate all the surroundings, the landscape is magnificent and the water turquoise.
We take advantage of the beach, at the end of the day we head towards the south of the bay where we find an ideal place to bivouac, we are 3 motorhomes including a French.
We are under the trees by the sea, we taste the Ouzo with our neighbors from the bivouac.

After the morning jogging we leave this beautiful place, we go through the village of Sfinari where we have lunch in a typical inn. At the beginning of the afternoon we find ourselves on the paradisiacal site of Elafonisi, we think we are in the tropics with a resemblance of certain Breton beaches.
On the other hand, there are a lot of people, mainly people from clubs in the north of the island who come for the day. In the evening we are a few motorhomes, ten at most.
In the morning we walk in this desert paradise, the tourists have not yet arrived.
Unfortunately in the afternoon the meltem rises and as often with force, we decide to leave in order to find a sheltered place.
We join Paleochora we park in the parking lot of the area center listed on the GPS on the other hand very difficult to access because of the prohibited directions and the narrow streets, fortunately we have a small motorhome.
We are happy to be in town, sheltered from the wind, in the evening we walk in the streets of this charming village

As often in the morning we start with jogging, we reached the resort of Sougia, a little touristy resort with a few campers on the beach in tent.
We are the only motorhome, we notice throughout our journey that few motorhome operators go to Crete.
We find an ideal place in the shade of a tamarisk.

At noon we eat at the restaurant in the resort of Sougia, direction Spili and its famous fountain, we join Triopetra but the strong wind on this long deserted beach discourages us, we try Agios Pavlos (Motorhome review info) but the parking lot is tiny and in slope.
We decide to look for another place we find a small resort frequented by the Greeks which is Kalamaki only downside the road is narrow, the seaside where we can park without worry is very sandy, be careful of the risk of silting up.
We spend a pleasant evening drinking a beer on the terrace of a cafe or we watch a match of the European Cup of football.

We continue our tour of the island (mainly the south which is wilder and adapted to motorhome)
We do our shopping in the town of Mires and at noon join the restaurant "VEGELIA" in Zaros because our guide "Geo" advises us this family restaurant we eat 10 dishes for 25 € to 2, we are sated.
The guide's advice for restaurants has been accurate twice now.
After this feast we must find a bivouac we find our life in Keratokampos an air of end of the world, we park by the sea always under a tamarisk, the beach is pebble fortunately because the strong wind does not let us go.

We dominate the sea the landscape is superb and locate the village of Xerokambos, superb place we are by the sea with 2 other motorhome, still an air of end of the world.
Beach and idleness rest day.
We leave our bivouac pass through Zakros where we taste a cold coffee and buy olive oil from the cooperative that we have to go to collect at the post office.
We reach Kourémenos beach next to Palekastro.

This morning we leave to go through Sitia again because Monday is market day, we stock up on supplies, we love to stroll through the markets
We buy some souvenirs (a small olive tree) and some olive oil.
Slowly we are approaching our return port
We are in the north, the places to park are rarer, we find a very small seaside resort where we are the only motorhome, we find a tamarisk to shade us.
We are at Milatos Beach.
In the morning we go on foot to the nearby station of Sissi, a walk of about 10 km round trip, nice walk. In the evening we are happy to be in Milatos because Sissi is the tourist resort par excellence, Afternoon beach.

We stroll in the village, beach in the morning before making us a restaurant where we eat very well (Le Socrate).
Then we go to Heraklion where we make our last trip to Crete before taking the ferry in the evening which will leave 2 hours late..
Here we are on the continent, we reach Patras and take the ferry to Italy.
We arrive in Ancona around 3:00 p.m. we cross part of Italy.
Arrival at the house around 4:00 p.m.
End of the holidays, but Greece and its islands are always so pleasant, a very nice trip, exotic and relaxing.
We stayed for 23 nights, we only did wild camping, the bivouacs by the sea are quite easy to find.
Always under the spell of the Greek Islands, the climate, the food and the Mediterranean landscapes
Easy to bivouac by the sea in quiet places with few people.
On condition of avoiding the north coast.
We drove 3606 kilometers (but few km in Crete).
€ 910 ferry (Ancona - Patras) and (Patras - Heraklion)
Lower cost of living than in France, inexpensive restaurant. On the other hand, fuel at substantially the same price as in France.
